You are standing in the hair care aisle — or scrolling through an online store — staring at two products. One is $8. One is $45. Both claim to be perfect for curly hair. Both have beautiful packaging. Both have glowing reviews.

How do you actually know which one is better for YOUR hair?

You read the ingredients.

Not the front of the bottle. Not the marketing claims. Not even the reviews — because what works for someone else’s hair may not work for yours.

The ingredient list on the back of every hair product is the only honest communication that product will ever have with you. Everything else is marketing. The ingredient list is regulated, standardized, and required by law to be accurate.

And once you know how to read it — truly read it, the way a cosmetic chemist(Like Rhonda – The founder of Inahsi Naturals) or licensed cosmetologist reads it — you will never waste money on the wrong product again.

Work

The Law Behind The Label

In the United States, the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act requires that all cosmetic products list their ingredients on the label. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforces this requirement.

In the European Union, EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 governs ingredient labeling.

Both regulatory frameworks require:

– All ingredients must be listed

– Ingredients must be listed using standardized international names

– Ingredients must be listed in descending order of concentration

– Ingredients present at 1% or less may be listed in any order after the main ingredients

This legal framework is what makes ingredient lists so valuable — and so honest.

📊 The Concentration Rule —

The Most Important Thing To

Understand

Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration.

This means:

– The first ingredient is present in the highest amount

– The last ingredient is present in the smallest amount

– Ingredients in the top five make up the bulk of the product

– Ingredients listed after preservatives (typically near the end) are usually present at less than 1%

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE:

Ingredient List:

  1. Water ← Makes up most of the product (often 60-80%)
  2. Cetearyl Alcohol ← Second highest concentration
  3. Behentrimonium Methosulfate ← Third highest
  4. Glycerin ← Still significant amount
  5. Shea Butter ← Moderate amount
  6. Hydrolyzed Keratin ← Getting smaller now
  7. Panthenol ← Small amount
  8. Fragrance ← Very small amount
  9. Phenoxyethanol ← Preservative, <1%
  10. Aloe Vera Extract ← Likely <1% despite marketing claims

This is how you spot Greenwashing: If a brand markets a product as “Shea Butter Enriched” but shea butter is ingredient #15 out of 20, there is barely any shea butter in that product. The marketing is misleading. The ingredient list is honest.

🌍 The INCI Naming System

INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. It is the standardized system used worldwide to name cosmetic ingredients on product labels.

INCI names are often:

– Latin botanical names for plant ingredients

– Chemical names for synthetic ingredients

– Modified chemical names for processed ingredients

Why this matters for you:

Many ingredients you know by their common names have completely different INCI names on labels. If you only know the marketing name, you will miss them entirely.

🔍 The 1% Threshold —

A Critical Concept

Ingredients present at 1% or less can be listed in any order after the main ingredients

This is important because:

  1. Many beneficial “Hero” ingredients — like expensive oils, proteins, and botanical extracts — are present at less than 1%
  1. Many potentially problematic ingredients are also present at less than 1%
  1. You cannot always tell from position alone whether a trace ingredient is beneficial or harmful

How to identify the 1% cutoff point:

Look for the preservatives in the ingredient list. 

Preservatives are almost always used at concentrations of 0.1-1%. 

Everything listed after the preservatives is almost certainly at 1% or less.

Common preservatives to look for:

→ Phenoxyethanol

→ Sodium benzoate

→ Potassium sorbate

→ Benzyl alcohol

→ Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)

→ Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT)

→ DMDM hydantoin

→ Imidazolidinyl urea

What

Everything Does

Category 1: 💧 Water (Aqua)

INCI name: Water / Aqua / Eau

Water is the base of almost every leave-in conditioner, shampoo, conditioner, and styling product.

 It is typically the first ingredient and makes up 50-80% of most formulations

Water is not just a carrier — it is the primary source of moisture for your hair. When you apply a water-based product to your hair, the water content is what actually hydrates the strand.

What to look for:

Water as the first ingredient = water-based product

– Water NOT as the first ingredient = anhydrous (waterless) product — butters, oils, waxes

For curly hair: Water-based products are generally preferred as primary moisturizers because water is the only true moisturizer. Oils and butters seal moisture in but do not provide moisture themselves.

Category 2: 🫧

Surfactants (Cleansing Agents)

Surfactants are the ingredients that cleanse the hair and scalp by lifting oils, dirt, and product buildup. They work by having a molecule with one water-loving end and one oil-loving end — allowing them to surround and remove oil-based debris when rinsed with water.

Surfactants are found primarily in shampoos and co-washes.

The Sulfate Debate — The Complete Truth

Sulfates are a category of surfactants. They are highly effective cleansers but have become controversial in the curly hair community. Here is the complete, nuanced truth:

Why harsh sulfates are problematic for curly hair specifically:

Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair because the curl pattern makes it harder for scalp sebum to travel down the hair shaft

– Harsh sulfates strip the natural oils that curly hair already struggles to retain

– They raise the pH of the hair significantly, lifting the cuticle

– They can cause hygral fatigue by disrupting the cuticle’s ability to regulate water absorption

> 💡 Professional Opinion: Harsh sulfates are not universally evil. If you have significant product buildup, use heavy styling products, or have an oily scalp, occasional use of a sulfate shampoo can be beneficial. The key is frequency and following with adequate moisture. For most curly-haired people, gentle surfactants are sufficient for regular cleansing.

Chelating Surfactants (For Hard Water)

EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)

Sodium Phytate

Citric acid (in higher concentrations)

These ingredients bind to mineral ions (calcium, magnesium) from hard water and remove them from the hair surface. If you live in a hard water area, look for these in your clarifying shampoo.

Category 3: 🧈 Conditioning Agents

Conditioning agents make hair feel soft, smooth, and manageable. They work by depositing on the hair surface and reducing friction between strands.

Cationic Conditioning Agents (The Most Effective)

Cationic means positively charged. Hair has a naturally negative charge, so positively charged conditioning agents are attracted to and bind strongly to the hair surface — this is called substantivity.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BTMS): One of the best conditioning agents available, Provides excellent slip and detangling,  Water-soluble — rinses clean. Found in many high-quality conditioners

Behentrimonium Chloride: Similar to BTMS, excellent conditioner, Very common in high-end conditioners

Cetrimonium Chloride: Lighter conditioning agent, Good for fine hair, Excellent detangling

Cetrimonium Bromide: Similar to cetrimonium chloride

Stearalkonium Chloride: Conditioning and antistatic, Common in conditioners and detanglers

Polyquaternium-7, -10, -11, -37, etc:  Film-forming conditioning agents,  Improves combability and reduce frizz,  Can build up with repeated use

Fatty Alcohols (Emollient Conditioning Agents)

This is one of the most misunderstood ingredient categories in curly hair care.

Not all alcohols are drying. Fatty alcohols are long-chain alcohols derived from natural fats and oils. They are emollient, conditioning, and moisturizing — the opposite of drying.

FATTY ALCOHOLS (Moisturizing — GOOD for curly hair):

Cetyl Alcohol

Cetearyl Alcohol

Stearyl Alcohol

Behenyl Alcohol

Myristyl Alcohol

Lauryl Alcohol (in conditioning context)

Arachidyl Alcohol

These ingredients:

– Soften and smooth the hair cuticle

– Improve slip and detangling

– Help emulsify products

– Provide moisture and conditioning

– Are found in almost every quality conditioner

🔴 DRYING ALCOHOLS

(Potentially Drying — AVOID in leave-ins

and stylers):

SD Alcohol (SD Alcohol 40, SD Alcohol 40-B)

Alcohol Denat. (Denatured Alcohol)

→ Isopropyl Alcohol

→ Propanol

→ Ethanol (in high concentrations)

These ingredients:

– Evaporate quickly, creating fast-drying effect

– Can strip moisture from the hair strand

– Used in some styling products for quick-dry effect

– Found in many spray products and some gels

– Particularly problematic for already-dry curly hair

EXCEPTION: Ethanol and some drying alcohols at very low concentrations (listed near the end of the ingredient list) may not be significantly drying — context and concentration matter.

Category 4: 🌊 Emollients, Humectants, And

Occlusives

These three subcategories of moisturizing ingredients work in completely different ways and are all important for curly hair.

Humectants — Draw Moisture In

Humectants are hygroscopic — they attract and bind water molecules from the surrounding environment (humidity) and draw them into the hair strand.

 

KEY HUMECTANTS FOR CURLY HAIR:

Glycerin (Glycerol):  Most effective and widely used humectant, Works best in moderate humidity (40-60%), In very low humidity: draws moisture OUT of hair, In very high humidity: can cause frizz by drawing too much moisture in

   

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera):  Humectant + anti-inflammatory + scalp soothing, Contains polysaccharides that coat and condition

   

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): Penetrating humectant — enters the cortex, Increases hair diameter slightly (volumizing),  Improves elasticity

   

Sodium PCA: Natural moisturizing factor found in hair, Excellent humectant, very gentle

   

Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate): Powerful humectant, Can hold up to 1000x its weight in water

   

Honey (Mel / Honey Extract): Natural humectant + conditioning

   

Sorbitol: Gentle humectant, good for sensitive scalps

   

Propylene Glycol:  Effective humectant, also helps other  ingredients penetrate

   

Butylene Glycol: Milder than propylene glycol, Humectant + solvent

⚠️ The Glycerin Warning: In very low humidity environments (below 40%), glycerin can actually pull moisture OUT of your hair shaft and into the dry air, making hair MORE dry and frizzy. If you live in a dry climate or experience dry winters, look for products with lower concentrations of glycerin, or apply glycerin-containing products over already-wet hair and seal immediately with an oil.

Emollients — Soften And Smooth

Emollients fill in the gaps between cuticle scales and smooth the hair surface, reducing friction and improving softness and shine.

✅ KEY EMOLLIENTS FOR CURLY HAIR:

PENETRATING OILS (Enter the hair cortex):

Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut Oil): Best-studied penetrating oil, Reduces protein loss during washing, Pre-poo treatment essential for high porosity

   

Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (Argan Oil): Rich in oleic acid and Vitamin E, Penetrates and adds shine, Lightweight — good for fine and low porosity hair

   

Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil (Jojoba Oil): Technically a liquid wax, not an oil, Closely mimics scalp sebum, Excellent for scalp health

   

Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado Oil): Rich in oleic acid, penetrates well, Excellent for high porosity and coarse hair

   

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond Oil): Lightweight, penetrating, Good for fine and low porosity hair

   

Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil (Grapeseed Oil): Very lightweight, penetrating, Excellent for fine and low porosity hair

SURFACE EMOLLIENTS (Coat and smooth):

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea Butter): Rich, heavy emollient. Best for high porosity and coarse hair

   

Mangifera Indica Seed Butter (Mango Butter): Lighter than shea, still rich. Good for medium-high porosity

   

Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter (Cocoa Butter): Very heavy occlusive,  Best for very high porosity, coarse hair

   

→ Cetyl Esters: Lightweight synthetic emollient. Adds slip and smoothness

   

Isopropyl Myristate: Lightweight emollient.  Reduces greasiness of heavier ingredients

Occlusives — Seal Moisture In

Occlusives create a physical barrier over the hair surface that slows moisture evaporation. They are essential for high porosity hair and as the final step in any moisture-sealing routine.

✅ OCCLUSIVES FOR CURLY HAIR:

Ricinus Communis Seed Oil (Castor Oil): Heavy occlusive — excellent sealant. Best for high porosity and coarse hair. Too heavy for fine or low porosity hair

   

Petroleum (Petrolatum / Vaseline): Extremely effective occlusive. Controversial in natural hair community.Not water-soluble — requires sulfate to remove. (Personally do NOT recommend)

   

Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum): Effective occlusive. Not water-soluble. (Personally do NOT recommend) Controversial — see detailed discussion below

   

Lanolin: Excellent occlusive from sheep’s wool.  Very effective moisture sealant

   

Beeswax (Cera Alba): Heavy occlusive.  Creates strong hold. Can cause significant buildup. (Personally do NOT recommend) 

 

Category 5: 🧬 Proteins And Amino Acids

LOOK FOR THESE PROTEIN INDICATORS ON LABELS:

Any “Hydrolyzed ___” ingredient: Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Silk, Hydrolyzed Collagen, etc.

   

Amino acids by name: Arginine, Cysteine, Glutamic Acid,  Leucine, Glycine, Alanine, etc.

   

“___Amino Acids” : Wheat Amino Acids, Silk Amino Acids, etc,  Keratin, Collagen, Elastin, Casein, Biotin, Egg-derived ingredients

Category 6: 🎨 Film Formers And Styling Ingredients

Film formers are ingredients that create a flexible film over the hair strand when dry, providing hold, definition, and frizz control.

COMMON FILM FORMERS IN CURLY HAIR PRODUCTS:

Polyquaternium-4, -7, -10, -11, -37, -44, -55, -72: Cationic film formers. Provide hold, reduce frizz, improve combability. Some can build up — clarify regularly

   

VP/DMAPA Acrylates Copolymer: Flexible hold polymer. Found in many gels and creams

   

Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer: Thickener and film former

   

PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone): Classic hair styling polymer. Water-soluble — rinses clean.  Found in many gels

   

PVP/VA Copolymer: Stronger hold than PVP alone

   

Carbomer: Thickener and film former. Creates gel texture

   

Hydroxyethylcellulose: Natural-derived film former. Gentle, water-soluble

   

Flaxseed Extract (Linum Usitatissimum): Natural film former. Provides flexible hold and definition. Excellent for curly hair

   

Okra Extract (Hibiscus Esculentus): Natural film former. Provides slip and definition

Category 7: 🔮 Silicones — The Complete Truth

Silicones are one of the most controversial ingredient categories in curly hair care. The truth is more nuanced than most online discussions suggest.

What Silicones Do

Silicones are synthetic polymers that coat the hair surface, providing:

– Exceptional smoothness and shine

– Significant frizz reduction

– Heat protection

– Detangling and slip

– Protection from environmental damage

From a purely functional standpoint, silicones are among the most effective ingredients in hair care.

The Problem With Silicones For Curly Hair

The issue is not that silicones are inherently harmful — it is that most silicones are not water-soluble, meaning they cannot be removed with gentle, sulfate-free cleansers.

When non-water-soluble silicones build up on the hair:

– They create a coating that blocks moisture from entering the hair shaft

– They create a false sense of smoothness while the hair underneath becomes increasingly dry

– They require sulfate shampoos to remove — which then strips the hair of moisture

– This creates a cycle of silicone buildup → stripping → dryness → more silicone use

The Silicone Classification System

🔴 NON-WATER-SOLUBLE SILICONES

(Avoid if sulfate-free/

Curly Girl Method):

Dimethicone — most common, heavy buildup

Cyclomethicone — lighter but still builds up

Cyclopentasiloxane — evaporates partially but builds up

Amodimethicone — bonds to damaged areas, heavy buildup

Dimethiconol — heavy, significant buildup

Phenyl Trimethicone — adds shine, builds up

Stearyl Dimethicone — heavy occlusive silicone

Cetyl Dimethicone — emollient silicone, builds up

HOW TO IDENTIFY: 

Ends in “-cone”, “-conol”, “-siloxane”, or “-xane”

WATER-SOLUBLE SILICONES (Generally safe for curly hair):

PEG-modified silicones (contain “PEG” in name)

Dimethicone Copolyol

Lauryl Methicone Copolyol

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer

HOW TO IDENTIFY

Usually contain “PEG” or  “copolyol” in the name

⚠️ EVAPORATING SILICONES (Low buildup risk):

Cyclotetrasiloxane (D4)

Cyclopentasiloxane (D5)

Cyclohexasiloxane (D6)

Trimethylsiloxyphenyl Dimethicone

These partially evaporate during drying, reducing (but not eliminating) buildup risk.

Note: D4 and D5 are restricted in rinse-off products in the EU due to environmental concerns.

> 💡 **Professional perspective:** If you use sulfate-free cleansers exclusively (meaning you follow the Curly Girl Method), avoid non-water-soluble silicones.

 If you (Do not follow the Curly Girl Method) clarify with a sulfate shampoo monthly, moderate use of silicone-containing products may be acceptable. 

Context and cleansing routine matter more than a blanket ban.

Category 8: 🛡️ Preservatives

Preservatives prevent microbial growth in water-containing products. Without preservatives, your conditioner would grow mold and bacteria within days.

The Paraben Debate:

PARABENS (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben):

→ Most studied preservative system in cosmetics, Effective at very low concentrations (0.01-0.3%)

Controversy: Some studies suggested potential endocrine disruption at high doses

Current scientific consensus (FDA, EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety): Safe at concentrations used in cosmetics

The EU has restricted some longer-chain parabens (butylparaben, propylparaben) in leave-on products for children under 3. Many brands have moved to paraben-free formulas in response to consumer preference

PARABEN ALTERNATIVES (What replaced them):

Phenoxyethanol — most common replacement, safe at <1%

Sodium Benzoate + Potassium Sorbate — natural-derived combination

Ethylhexylglycerin — often combined with phenoxyethanol

Benzyl Alcohol — effective but can cause sensitivity in some

Caprylyl Glycol — gentle, multifunctional

Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate — natural preservative

PRESERVATIVES TO BE CAUTIOUS OF:

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) — high sensitization potential, restricted in leave-on products in EU

Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT) — similar concerns

DMDM Hydantoin — formaldehyde-releasing  preservative, some sensitivity concerns

Imidazolidinyl Urea — formaldehyde-releasing

Quaternium-15 — formaldehyde-releasing

Category 9: ⚗️ pH Adjusters

pH adjusters are used to bring the final product to the correct pH range. They are critical ingredients even though they are rarely discussed.

Citric Acid — lowers pH (makes more acidic)

Lactic Acid — lowers pH, also a humectant

Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) — raises pH (makes more alkaline)

Triethanolamine (TEA) — raises pH

AMP (Aminomethyl Propanol) — raises pH

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR CURLY HAIR:

Healthy hair pH: 4.5-5.5 (slightly acidic)

Products with pH above 5.5 lift the cuticle

Products with pH below 4.5 can be too acidic

→ Look for brands that publish their product pH

Acidic products (pH 4-5) close the cuticle 

   and reduce frizz

High-pH products (7+) lift the cuticle and 

   can cause damage over time

This category includes plant-derived ingredients that provide specific benefits beyond basic conditioning.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera):  Humectant, soothing, anti-inflammatory. Contains polysaccharides that coat and condition

   

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green Tea):  Antioxidant, protects from UV damage. Contains EGCG — supports scalp health

   

Rosmarinus Officinalis Extract (Rosemary): Stimulates circulation at scalp. Some evidence for supporting hair growth. Antioxidant properties

   

Urtica Dioica Extract (Nettle): Rich in silica and minerals, Supports scalp health

   

Centella Asiatica Extract (Gotu Kola):  Anti-inflammatory, supports scalp health

Water as first ingredient (water-based products)

→ Humectants high on the list:(glycerin, aloe, panthenol)

→ Small hydrolyzed proteins: (hydrolyzed silk, hydrolyzed rice protein)

→ Lightweight emollients :(argan oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil)

→ Gentle surfactants : (decyl glucoside, coco glucoside)

→ pH-balanced formulas (4.5-5.5)

❌ AVOID:

Heavy butters high on ingredient list: (shea butter as 2nd or 3rd ingredient)

Heavy oils high on ingredient list:  (castor oil, olive oil in large amounts)

Non-water-soluble silicones

Mineral oil or petrolatum

→ Heavy proteins (large molecular weight)

→ Products with many film formers (buildup risk is higher)

Medium Porosity — What To Look For On Labels

✅ SEEK:

→ Balanced formulas with both humectants 

  and emollients

→ Medium-weight conditioning agents

→ Balanced protein content

→ pH-balanced formulas

❌ AVOID:

Extreme formulas (very heavy OR very light)

→ Non-water-soluble silicones

→ Harsh sulfates for regular use

→ Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives

High Porosity — What To Look For On Labels

✅ SEEK:

Rich, heavy conditioners with butters and heavy emollients

→ Proteins high on the ingredient list

→ Heavy sealants : (castor oil, shea butter, avocado oil)

Ceramides — fill cuticle gaps

Behentrimonium methosulfate or chloride: excellent conditioning

ACV or citric acid — closes cuticle

Multiple humectants

❌ AVOID:

Drying alcohols in any leave-on product

Harsh sulfates (further damages cuticle)

Lightweight-only formulas : (will not seal moisture effectively)

Products with high pH

Non-water-soluble silicones : (buildup is harder to remove without further damaging the cuticle)

🚨 PART FOUR: Spotting Greenwashing And

Misleading Marketing

 

What Is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing is when a brand uses marketing language to imply a product is more natural, clean, or beneficial than it actually is. The ingredient list always tells the truth — the front of the bottle often does not.

🔴 Red Flags On Product Labels

RED FLAG 1: “Natural” or “Organic” with no certification

→ These terms are not regulated for hair products

→ A product can be 95% synthetic and still be marketed as “natural”

Look for actual certifications: USDA Organic, COSMOS, Ecocert

RED FLAG 2: Hero ingredient is at the bottom of the list

“Enriched with Argan Oil”: but argan oil is ingredient #18

“With Shea Butter”:  but shea butter is after the preservatives

→ The marketing ingredient is present in trace amounts — less than 1%

RED FLAG 3: “Free from” claims without context

“Sulfate-free” but contains harsh alternative surfactants

→ “Paraben-free” but contains formaldehyde-releasing preservatives

→ “Silicone-free” but contains mineral oil (which causes similar buildup issues)

RED FLAG 4: Proprietary blends

“Our exclusive CurlBoost Complex™”: You cannot assess what is actually in it

→ Often used to hide small amounts of beneficial ingredients behind a fancy name

RED FLAG 5: Vague ingredient names

“Fragrance” or “Parfum” can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals

→ “Natural fragrance” is slightly better but still not fully disclosed

RED FLAG 6: Before and after photos

→ Not regulated for hair product marketing

→ Can be achieved with styling, lighting, and photo editing

→ Always read the ingredient list, not the before/after

✅ Green Flags — Signs Of A Well-Formulated Product

GREEN FLAG 1: Water or aloe as first ingredient in leave-ins and conditioners

GREEN FLAG 2: Behentrimonium methosulfate or behentrimonium chloride high on the list in conditioners

GREEN FLAG 4: pH is published or available from the brand

Ingredient lists are ordered by concentration — highest to lowest — making them your most, honest source of product information

The 1% rule: Everything after preservatives is likely present at less than 1% — 

   regardless of how it is marketed

INCI names are standardized — learn the INCI name for your key ingredients

Fatty alcohols (cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl) are MOISTURIZING — not drying

Drying alcohols (SD alcohol, alcohol denat., 

   isopropyl alcohol) should be avoided in leave-on products

Non-water-soluble silicones build up and block moisture — problematic if you use sulfate-free cleansers

Harsh sulfates (SLS, ALS) are too stripping for regular curly hair use — gentle alternatives exist

Glycerin is excellent in moderate humidity but can cause dryness in very low humidity

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Do I need to memorize all of these ingredients?

A: No — but bookmark this post and refer to it when shopping. Over time, you will naturally memorize the ingredients that matter most for your specific hair. Start with the top five to avoid (SLS, non-water-soluble silicones, mineral oil, drying alcohols, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives) and the top five to seek (behentrimonium methosulfate, glycerin, panthenol, your preferred oils, hydrolyzed proteins).

Q: Are expensive products always better formulated?

A: Absolutely not. Price reflects marketing, packaging, brand positioning, and distribution costs — not necessarily formula quality. Some of the best-formulated curly hair products are drugstore brands. Read the ingredient list, not the price tag.

Q: A product has SLS but it is listed 10th on the ingredient list. Is it still bad?

A: If SLS is listed 10th or later, it is present at a relatively low concentration and the product is likely much milder than one with SLS as the second or third ingredient. Context and concentration matter. However, for regular use, I would still choose a product with gentler surfactants for curly hair.

Q: How do I know if a product is pH balanced?

A: Most brands do not list pH on the label. Your best options are: check the brand’s website or FAQ, email the brand directly, use pH strips to test the product yourself, or follow bloggers and cosmetologists who test and publish product pH data.

Q: Is “fragrance-free” the same as “unscented”?

A: No — and this distinction matters. Fragrance-free means no fragrance ingredients were added. Unscented means masking fragrances were added to cover the natural smell of other ingredients. If you have a sensitive scalp, choose fragrance-free, not just unscented.
